Burns Park Beauty on Professor’s Row

This Friday we are featuring 929 Olivia Avenue in Ann Arbor. We asked Jean Wedemeyer to tell us a bit about her new listing. Read what she had to say!

Find a bit of local history in this Burns Park home. 929 Olivia Avenue is full of original detail and has been meticulously maintained. In 2009, the home received a Historic Preservation Award from the city of Ann Arbor. The current owner’s love for the home is evident to all.
Q. Can you describe the architectural style of the home?
This house is a blend of Colonial Revival and Tudor-style elements. Enter to a 28′ long living room with 9′ ceilings and cozy sunroom. Behind this, find a wonderful 3-season porch with pine floors and skylights. The formal dining room and traditional large butler’s pantry lead to the updated kitchen with a back staircase to the second floor.

Q. Please describe any distinctive features of the home.
The 3-season porch is in league by itself and overlooks the sizeable backyard. There is additional space to be found in the 367 SF studio building. Just out the back door, this structure has heat and a recently refinished wood floor, and for over 100 years has been used as a music studio.

Q. Can you tell us a fun fact about the home?
929 Olivia has been home to a roster of UM professors. In the 1920s, Guy Maier, a professor of music at UM, resided there. He was a pioneer in acoustic recording with the Victor Talking Machine Company and had 2 Steinway grand pianos in the studio building. The house shutters with musical notes and symbols were added when Maier and his wife, who was also a musician, lived there.

Q. Tell us about the neighborhood / area of the home?
The location is top-notch, close to elementary and middle schools, walkable to the UM Central Campus, hospitals, and bus service. The garage is located on the back alley, as are all on this block. There is a private drive from the alley up to the house which adds both convenience and lots of additional parking. Inside and out, this is a really lovely spot.
